Artist statement
I am a realist oil painter. Through portraiture, I explore how a likeness is made rather than simply recorded. My subjects are mostly close family and friends, along with my own self-portraits.
I am bound by what I observe, but I am increasingly interested in how subtle changes in edge, color, and surface alter the emotional response a painting asks for. I want my paintings to be visually accurate and also to carry the spirit of the person, something that feels truer than a literal copy of a photograph.
The surface has become just as important to how the work is understood. Brush direction, texture, and opacity shape how a piece is completed. By varying where my hand can and cannot be seen in the paint, I control when the process shows through a realistic image. These are technical decisions, but also perceptual ones: they change how viewers work out how the painting was made, and they slow the first meeting between artwork and audience, so the piece is appreciated more deeply.
